Macquarie University taps Being Australian for Marketing Course

SYDNEY: 15 May 2005

Being Australian will be the focus of a third-year marketing course at Sydney?s Macquarie University this Spring.

Third-year marketing students will analyse Being Australian from a business perspective and develop marketing strategies for the venture as part of their course assessment.

Students enrolled in BBA313 Marketing Management - Effectiveness and Efficiency are on the home stretch of a senior marketing elective covering product pricing, distribution and communications issues.

Being Australian was chosen to provide students with a ?hands-on? experience of marketing analysis, planning and decision-making relating to a real-world enterprise.

"Obviously, this is very exciting news for Being Australian. We?ve been so busy laying the operational groundwork for the venture so it will be great to find out what the students think we should do,? says Being Australian founder, Doug Kirkpatrick.

Macquarie University marketing lecturer and course leader, June Buchanan, says Being Australian offers Macquarie?s marketing students an important opportunity to practice applying what they?ve learned and to experience critical planning and decision-making.

?From Macquarie?s perspective, what makes Being Australian even more interesting is the fact that it is not a typical ?better-mousetrap? start-up company with a particular tangible product, which students have worked on in the past. So our students will be challenged to think through the relevance issue more carefully.?

Kirkpatrick will brief the students about his business in early August this year. The students, operating in small groups, will then conduct 'SWOT' analyses exploring Being Australian's business strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats before formulating their marketing strategies. The 20-page documents are due in October and are worth 20 percent of course assessment.
