'Typical Fantale wrapper - always something interesting to read while waiting for the lights in the theatre to dim.' posted by Doug Kirkpatrick

Fantales - things of beauty

an experience of food

Well, they hardly qualify as part of your daily nutrition but Fantales (sometimes called 'Fantails') from the good ol' Allens Sweets company (sadly just a memory now) were a favourite of mine and my dentist when I was growing up. Today, they still are. An Australian experience I am sure many people can relate to is chewing (cautiously!) on a chocolate-coated caramel Fantale while reading all the interesting movie-related stuff on the wrapper as other movie-goers went about finding their seats.

I'm old enough to remember that back in the days of wooden floorboards in theatres, people in the nosebleed rows used to let handfuls of Jaffas rattle down the aisles to the seats at the front.

Such a waste of perfectly fine Australian sweets, really. But it was very amusing at the time. The ushers were never impressed, however, since they would have to clean up afterward. Of course, I never personally rolled any Jaffas. Heavens no!... Wouldn't dream of it... It was always the unruly layabouts up the back who did that.
