Living on the Edge

an experience of the outback

90% of Australians live on the coastal fringe of our great country, where the lands meet the sea, most of us are afraid to challenge the vast outback - dry and hot with unknown hardships & unseen dangers. We prefer to remain by the cool waters edge - first in line for a sea breeze, However the people who venture forth and explore the interior, find hidden jewels and re -awaken an ancient dreaming for which they never knew they had...since I was 13 and living in my mother country of Scotland I had a subconcious calling to come to experience Australia...I arrived here 15 years later and the first thing I noticed was the warm breeze on my skin ..wow! and this was at night time too...I inhaled the scent of Eucalypts mixed with damp earth - after rain.... and I heard a distant flock of white cockatoos flying home to roost at sundown, Slowly I became as laidback as the other Aussie's and eventually walked barefoot through the red stone of the outback gorges, feeling the country with my senses and soaking up the ancient traces of people and places. Australia seeped into my soul, ants climbed all over me but I didn't flinch, I crossed many spiders paths and didn't over-react, I listened to aboriginal people singing and playing didjeridoo which so perfectly suited the country and its animals and it took me back to an ancient time and space which was not my own but I only witnessed from a distance. Finally I wished to dance in the rain after a long hot summer - which is unheard of in my home country of Scotland, where it rains all the time and people hate it....oh the joys of being an Aussie.......
