Eating Violet Crumbles

an experience of food

As far as I know Violet Crumble bars have been uniquely Australian. At least that's how I remember them. And for the many years I lived overseas, coming home to Australia was always sweetened (no pun intended) by the experience of chomping into a violet crumble bar.

In fact, the craving was so strong one day at Melbourne Airport. After clearing customs with luggage in hand the first order of business was to locate the concourse newspaper stand where I knew I could get my hands on the chocolate bar Aussies refer to as the 'Violent Rumble' (which is appropriate for a product with an advertising slogan: 'it's the way it shatters that matters!')

Australia's own Hoadley's Chocolates (set up by Abel Hoadley) made the first Violet Crumble bar in Melbourne in 1913. In 1972, Hoadley's Chocolates was acquired by Rowntree and became Rowntree Hoadley. Then in 1988, the Swiss firm Nestle acquired the Rowntree Company. Today the Swiss are making this Aussie icon but eating them is still very much an Australian experience.

Thankfully, my grandmother used to let me spoil myself to the point of illness with a bag of those fabulous bite-size blocks. Aren't grandparents the best. No rules. Only wilful indulgence. Thanks heavens for the 'violent rumble'.
