Coastal sandstone

an experience of country and coast

People visiting Sydney are often amazed by the quality of life enjoyed here, especially by those fortunate souls living in places next to the water.

Here's an example of unique Aussie living -- urban tiers of designer houses dress-circled all the way down to an intimate community beach (Tamarama beach in this case) framed by cliffs of flossed sandstone.

Sydney sandstone looks liked flossed halva (a curious Arabic/European sweet). Despite being made of sand and being gritty to the touch, sandstone is very hard. Many old Sydney buildings are built on and from the stuff. Traffic tunnels are dug through the stuff. It's Sydney's answer to New York's volcanic basalt. Up and down the coast the sandstone changes in colour ranging from ivory to brown. It's very Australian.
