Outdoor shower

an experience of country and coast

There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about standing under a shower rose on a pile of rocks in the middle of dense bushland.

On a trip to a rural property near Wollongong in New South Wales, I stayed at a place at the end of a dirt track miles from anywhere. When I asked, 'Where's the shower?', someone pointed outside the window toward the platform of rocks next to the verandah. 'Right there, mate!', I was was told. And so it was, in all of its rustic simplicity, complete with an authentic Australia-made shower rose.

Thankfully the water was hot because, even though I was there in summer, with a stiff wind blowing over a wet naked body in winter I would imagine that shower has important curative qualities as well as providing the only way to have a wash. The joy of rural living.
