Bondi Beach - historic more than bohemian

an experience of country and coast

It used to be you could catch an old Sydney tram to Bondi Beach. But those days are gone. There's the Eastern Suburbs railway line to Bondi Junction and then it's a bus or your own two feet to reach the sand of Australia's most famous seaside destination.

The old trams are gone but history hasn't completely disappeared from Bondi Beach. Plenty of historic architecture frames the beach front, including the elegant Bondi Surf Bathers Lifesaving Club and the Bondi Pavilion Community Cultural Centre.

The Pavilion is a truly intriguing building and a wonderful vestage from Sydney's past featuring a gallery, function rooms, art workshop and enclosed outdoor theatre. It's the home of major festivals and hundreds of performances throughout the year.

At either end of Bondi Pavilion, it's possible to have a truly authentic Australian dining experience in a totally Australian setting.

There's the famous NICK's BONDI BEACH offering fabulous chargrilled beef and seafood in front of the ocean where the seafood's come from. (www.nicks-seafood.com.au/nicks_bondi_beach.htm).

At the other end of the Bondi Pavilion is a wonderful cafe called LUSH (www.lush.com.au), operated by my friend, Stephen Lusher. LUSH delivers very relaxed casual dining -- great food and outrageously decadent ice cream in front of all the action on the beach.

I love having breakfast with friends in the bright morning sun with the sound of the surf - a most exquisite Australian experience.
