Santa In the Drink

an experience of everyday life

In the late 1950s, we were living in a small fisherman's cottage at Watsons Bay, Sydney, near Camp Cove Beach. It was a blissful place to live - for walking and swimming and having many visitors.

Lovely Alice Doyle, the matriarch of the Doyle Family, lived nearby and was always thinking of ways to entertain the many children in the area.

One Christmas Day, she organised a Christmas party for all the children in Watsons Bay Park - and Santa was going to arrive in a boat nearby. The day was perfect and the children (and parents) all so excited. But there was a slight hiccup when Santa stepped off the rocking boat and disappeared straight into the sea - bag of presents and all! Cries of sorrow from the watchers - but he emerged gamely above the water and ferried his bag safely ashore. Oh - such happy memory.
