Not ice, nor 'Ice', nor snow. Just Pilbara salt

an experience of travel

The land in the north west flattens out near the coast. Mirage-like is a giant pile of raw salt near the highway between Port Hedland and South Hedland. As we drove by we saw how the salt is being 'farmed' in giant evaporation pans on either side of the road. Amazingly, the stuff is harvested with bulldozers. No pussy-footing around when it comes to shifting salt. It was tempting to jump out of the car and go tread on the salt to see how it might crunch up beneath our feet. But we never did. Just drove on and wondered. A sign we drove past said the whole thing is run by Dampier Salt Limited. The north west of Australia is perfect for salt production. As anyone who lives out there knows, the weather is almost always insanely hot.
