Railmotor from Werris Creek

an experience of travel

When you were Australian years ago, and living in the country where sealed roads were scarce, branch lines between towns was the way people got around. So, naturally railway stations were the hub of social activity where people gathered to greet and farewell lovers, loved ones and friends.

At Werris Creek, a country town in New South Wales, is a railway station typical of the era when the railway was the Internet of the time. On the day I visited, a beautifully restored rail motor carriage had arrived at the platform. With a ticket to ride I stepped aboard and minutes later was flying along at 80KPH down single track toward a nearby town just as people did all those years ago when there was no such thing as sport utility vehicles and 'roadside assist'.

Seeing the country by rail motor would a be a fantastic adventure. But probably terribly pricy if, for no other reason, than to pay trackage rights for access to the railway lines. But it would be a fantastic experience.
