Carcoar

an experience of

40 years ago the Mid Western Highway in NSW by- passed this lovely little town - and it's little, just 250 people - and so Carcoar had remained almost unchanged since then.

It's not been tizzyied up to be a 'tourist town ' but the buildings along main street, like the old court house

with its high ceilings and forbidding rooms, are all genuine reminders of the past. The local historical Society has a wonderful collection of memorabilia - oooike an old telephone exchange with all its wires and buttons, first world war artifacts, a lady's fearsome-looking boned corset and a 1935 newspaper proclaiming 'Germany Conquers Austria'.

The general store ('Enterprise Stores') sells absolutely everything in wonderful confusion. From ice creams and teddy bears, to spectacles and clothes, the helpful owner ,who's been behind the counter since it opened 41 years ago, will find anthing you want.

We had lunch at the Tea Rooms which has lots of local hand made caps and bootees and knitted things all over the place - there's a very friendly, community spirit about it all.

Next door outside the pub, Tony gave us old fashioned tunes on his guitar to an admiring audience of three little girls and two (I think) visitors to town.

Carcoar is a town where you feel you've left the 21st century behind for a while. It's good feeling !
