Lunchtime for 'Wombat'

an experience of country and coast

While I was visiting friends at their farm near Goulburn in 2004, I met a bloke on a neighbouring property who has a pet wallaroo orphaned after the death of its mother. The bloke's name is John and he calls the wallaroo 'Wombat' (which can be confusing since a wombat is a very different Australian animal).

Anyway, with morning chores finished, John's kids raced off on their bikes and suddenly the backyard was quiet. 'Wombat' apparently decided it was safe to appear. John said, "Watch this!". as he knelt down on the grass near the clothesline and pulled on the top of his sweatshirt to simulate its mother's pouch. 'Wombat' suddenly skipped over and climbed right into the sweatshirt. Priceless!

'Wombat' twisted and turned to get comfortable as John cradled the animal in his arms. Moments later, John and Wombat settled together on the steps to the laundry for a drink of milk from a stubbie.

Only in Australia.
