The flood of 1956

an experience of country and coast

I recently came across some old photos taken back in 1956 when a large flood hit the Riverland region.
 
These photos were taken at Moorook, S.A and show well the damage caused by the flood. Notice the flood banks that were made in a lastditch attemped to hold back the rising water.
 
Even today you can still see the flood banks around Moorook and the surrounding areas, which up until resently were unable to be removed due to council regulations but the likelihood of another flood of this magnitude is very remote. There are still a few houses left where you can see structural damage caused by the flood. Very interesting photos, a little bit of our history...
