Experiencing the Hunter Valley, NSW

The Hunter Valley rightly claims to be our greatest wine growing region. But while wine buffs can taste and compare the wines, others can enjoy the wide variety of experiences the region has to offer.

There's everything from bush walks, hot air ballooning and golf to transport in horse drawn carriages or helicopter charter. Or you can just relax in the tranquil environment and enjoy the surrounding wildlife and the bird choruses.

For accommodation, the Hunter Valley Country cabins are the perfect answer. Just 10 minutes from the Pokolbin Wineries, Hosts Brian and Delia Metcalf offer self-contained cabins as well as bed and breakfast stays and boutique wine tours. Air conditioned, but with country-style fireplaces for the winter months, each cabin has TV and DVD, cots are available and the discriminating will appreciate the coffee plungers!

As well as sampling the famous Pokolbin Wineries, you can visit the Cheese Factory at Pokolbin. Sam and Cara Haymes have their new antiquarian bookshop at Peppers Creek with topics ranging from art and architcture to nautical navigation. Sam is the sixth generation of antiquarian booksellers." the Maitland Monthly Markets are well worth a visit and the Hunter Valley Zoo at Cessnock is great for all ages. The Maitland Gaol is full of history.

Coming attractions include the Maitland Valentine Maasquerade Ball on 14 February 2009. It's a three-course dinner and dance with proceeds helping services to the disabled.

On 18-19 April 2009, it's "All Aboard" for the Steamfest. The Kids Party Train and High Tea Train were both winners in the 2008 event.
