The Big Rocking Horse - Gumeracha, South Australia

Just outside Adelaide is the South Australian town of Gumeracha, which has the curious reputation for being home to the Big Rocking Horse, a giant toy rocking horse built to help promote the local toy Factory.

The factory happens to be the town's major attraction.

Gumeracha has been around since European settlement of South Australia. At one point there was a flour mill operating. Today, except for the toy factory, Gumeracha is a sleepy town with plenty of time for reflection and contemplation.

In recent years the town has earned a reputation for its floral displays and immaculately kept gardens. It would probably win any 'tidy-towns' competition hands down.

However, anyone with an interest in toys will find The Toy Factory in Gumeracha hard to resist. The factory is located on the Main Road and has a shop specialising in wooden toys. The rocking horse, which can be climbed, is impossible to miss.

In addition to the big rocking horse in town, there are wineries worth visiting as well including Chains of Ponds Wines established in 1993, Malcolm Creek Vineyard established in 1982, Samphire Wines established in 1978 and Talunga Premium Wines, another family winery established in 1987 and specialising in both red and white table wines derived from 14 different grapes. All wineries offer tastings. It's best to call ahead to verify open hours.

Accommodation is available at the Gumeracha Hotel on Main Rd and the Vineyard Cottage also on Main Road. Chain of Ponds Vineyard operates a cottage as well.
