The Big Cigar - Churchill, Victoria


The Victorian town of Churchill was purpose built in the late 1960s to accommodate workers involved in building and maintaining the Hazelwood Power Station. The power station remains Victoria's second largest.
 
With the power station completed in 1971 the town designed for 40,000 people was in need of a new purpose. Enter Monash University, which built its Gippsland campus there.
 
Besides being a university town, Churchill attracts water sport enthusiasts to its artificial lake. The lake is an ideal place for swimming and sailing, especially as the water temperature stays constant at 18-23 degrees celsius.
 
Churchill is named in honour of Sir Winston Churchill, who happened to like the odd cigar. This, therefore, explains why the presence of the Big Cigar standing tall in town. At first glance, one would be forgiven for thinking that there must be a local tobacco industry. In fact, the Big Cigar merely recalls the occasional pleasure enjoyed by the man who helped shape the world with his leadership in winning a world war.
