Port Douglas an experience of country and coast Being Australian for me is 'summer in winter' in Port Douglas. Weather apart, it's the village atmosphere I liked. Everyone's laid back and friendly and there's a pioneer spirit 21st century style with young guys starting up new businesses. I spoke to a young man, Adam Pantlin, about life in Port Douglas. He runs a diving school called Tech Dive. Seems many locals came north to escape the cold and the big-city rat race. Why not? It was 25 degrees when I left and 17 in Sydney. And I heard about the luxury yacht tours organised by a husband and wife team, Mark and Chris Blunden, who run Marcrista Luxury Charters, which apparently helps attract plenty of visitors looking for a taste of pampered isolation. Husband and wife businesses in PD seem the thing.   So Port Douglas is GROWING. The town's shoe shop owner told me there were 400 people when she first came and now there are thousands.
