Riding on the bus

an experience of travel

When I recently came to Melbourne from New Zealand to study at U Melb, I had to get around on public transport. I was delighted to hear people say 'thank you driver' when leaving the bus, even from the rear exit. I curiously observed this to see if it was mandatory, and even if so, what sort of tone and facial expression there was. It is not scientific, but I think most people were being sincere and from the reaction of driver's faces, I think it mattered to them a great deal most of the time. I have been in many countries and not see this, even in the friendly South Island New Zealand city of Christchurch where I live. So, Good on ya Aussies, for a lovely perhaps unique, practice of warmth and open gratitude, which from positive psychology, is a mark of positive emotions. This makes me feel grateful for being here.
