'Typical scene out west - wild 'roos loitering in the hot dry scrub' posted by Gillian Jennings

Kangaroo shooting in Western Australia

an experience of the outback

When I was very young living in rural Western Australia, my sister and I used to go night-shooting in the ute with the local boys from surrounding farms.

I was about 10. My sister was about nine. We'd sit in the front. The boys would be in the back tray. We'd use spot lights to locate the kangaroos in the darkness.

When the roos saw the light shining at them, we could see their eyes glowing in the dark. They'd stay very still and just look into the light - and then one of the boys would shoot them.

The trouble with the kangaroos was they were pests: they destroyed the crops, flattening and destroying the wheat. They bred like rabbits and caused all sorts of problems for the farmers.
