Hanging out to dry an experience of everyday life Hanging laundry on a Hills Hoist has got to be one of the most ubiquitous Australian experiences.   After all, the darn thing was invented by an Australian (Gilbert Toyne in Geelong in 1912), then enhanced and marketed by another Australian (Lance Hill of Adelaide beginning in 1945).   It seems you can't drive anywhere in the country without spotting some version of the trusty Hills Hoist next to someone's house.   So, being Australian is to be standing under the ol' Hills with a basket of washing, particularly if you happen to be somewhere out in the bush, with giant blue Australian sky overhead, magpies squawking from the trees and pesky blowflies making a nuisance of themselves in front of your face.     Thanks to Doug Kirkpatrick from Melbourne on 06/10/2005 share it pin it print it report it
