Dodging busted Telecom pits
an experience of city and town
I used to work for Telecom in the mid 80s, installing telex machines (remember those?) and modems. A great job. Sure, people always moaned that it took 'forever' to get a phone connected to the home or office. But I found people inside Telecom to be very committed to quality of workmanship, and workmanship took time. We didn't rush things if it meant doing a half-baked job. I was proud to work for Telecom back then. So, after several years overseas I find the experience of being an Australian on the footpaths of Australia a surprising and disappointingly risky affair -- just look at the trouble one can get into. HEY -- who is supposed to be looking after these things? Wouldn't happen in my Telecom days. Seems being Australian is running the risk of breaking your ankle inside in a neglected ex-Telecom/PMG telephone cable pit. Not such a good 'Australian' experience.
