Taking a punt on the Melbourne Cup - Part 1 of 2

an experience of sports

The Melbourne Cup (a horse race that stops a nation) isn't just a Melbourne event. It's an event in every city and town around Australia. It provides punting opportunities for the common man (and woman) not normally disposed to a 'flutter' on the horses and for whom race calls happen on radio stations most people skip when tuning the dial.

I walked down to Martin Place in Sydney to see what kind of crowd turned out to watch a bigscreen TV. I only had a pocket camera in hand. Fortunately, I ran into a bloke equipped with a proper camera for capturing the action. Thankfully, he agreed to my invitation to share a few of his shots of what he saw through his lens. Here they are -- moments on the Australian experience on a patch of pavement in Martin Place, Sydney.
