Clean-up Day

an experience of country and coast

A few years ago Ian Kiernan had a vision: Clean up Australia.

Today, as a result of that idea, some friends and I, along with tens of thousands of other Australians, went to work with bags and gloves to clean up other people's rubbish.

Twelve of us went to work in Nielsen Park alongside Sydney Harbour. The Member for Wentworth, Malcolm Turnbull MP, got involved as well.

We found the ocean-etched sandstone crevices along the water's edge jammed with all kinds of garbage -- tennis balls, babies bottles, destroyed eskies and heaps and heaps of plastic bottles. Most of it probably comes from boats passing by in the harbour. It didn't take long to fill up bags and bags of the stuff. Sometimes the piles of rubbish hid seething masses of crabs lurking about the salt water below.

Afterward, we gathered together 15 odd bags of rubbish collected in just over an hour and a half. A hell of a haul. The whole thing was a raging success thanks to Mary-Lou Jarvis who catered a picnic to reward the team.
