Australian architecture: where hip and historic coexist
an experience of city and town
Down the street from the central business district of Sydney are the famous Eveleigh Railway Workshops. They were on the way to being demolished thanks to overzealous developers and their politically motivated friends in state government. But fortunately, the wonderful old buildings have been spared the wrecker's ball. Today, the Australian Technology Park nestles within the original walls of the old railway workshop. Indeed, parts of the facility can apparently be removed at will leaving the original brick and iron structures unblemished by modern occupancy. Walking through the rugged steel and brick buildings is like stepping back 100 years. In a way, the blend of modern glass and old iron takes on an especially Australian feel down at Eveleigh: a case of architects and designers being Australian, you might say.
