Lawn in the Pilbara
an experience of the outback
Being Australian in the Pilbara is about living with red oxide dust on everything. I mean, it's EVERYWHERE. On cars, on roofs, on shop windows, on family pets, on lawns... Iron ore dust from the mines has been a real challenge for the hardworking folks in Newman, and Port Hedland as well, where giant ships cart portable hunks of Australia off to China to be melted down into, well...just about everything you need around your home that has any steel in it. Anyway, the Pilbara at dusk is magical. Sunsets cast blankets of yellow light across spinafex bubbling up from the ground under a giant dome of blue sky. It's hauntingly beautiful and eerie. You ought to go check it out. Hire a caravan and go there. It's like no other place on Earth. Just mind the dust if the wind gets up.
