Farm fresh eggs - scrambled by bike

an experience of country and coast

The next door neighbour's daughter, Lorelle Cargee (spelling), and my sister Robina and I used to ride our bikes a lot when we lived in rural Western Australia. The roads weren't all paved then and lots of bumps.

One day, my mum packed some freshly laid eggs into old 'Activite' tins with wire handles that dad had fashioned. The eggs were wrapped in newspaper - good enough padding for a bike ride, we thought.

We carried the tins on our handle bars and rode two miles on the back roads to Lorelle's house.

When we got there Lorelle's mum found all the eggs broken. It was a disgusting soup of newspaper soaked in egg yolk and egg white.

Needless to say, we were never invited to carry eggs from our farm to her's again on handle bars. These days, I get my eggs from the supermarket up the street. The days of collecting eggs from the chooks out back seems like a distant memory.
