Genuine Aussie gladiators...

an experience of TV and movies

[May 2006] What made watching the Channel Nine interview with Beaconsfield miners, Brant Webb and Todd Russell, such an Aussie experience for me was the feeling of connection to them and their story simply because they are fellow Aussies. Their humanity and character really shone through, toughness, tenderness and laconic humour reflecting their 'Australianness'. The stuff of real-life antipodean gladiators.

Their interview also offered a wonderful sense of the community they're from - Beaconsfield, Tasmania, a microcosm of the Australian community.

I suppose people of Beaconsfield probably know only too well that in the end, as a community, all they really have is each other.

And one other thought: in many ways, the way Todd and Brant related their experience during their interview exemplifies the reason why Being Australian (this project) began: the magic that happens when someone tells it like it is, connecting us to their experience and their humanity in ways that inform and inspire.
